Nov 11, 2015 After trying for several weeks to update the AMD graphic chips of the 2011 MBP, I have successfully found a way to update the catalyst drivers to 12.6. The ATI Radeon 9200 is a PCI video card compatible with most Macs with PCI slots. However, ATI notes that it is not compatible with the Digital Audio and Gigabit Ethernet/Mystic G4 Power Mac under Mac.
In addition I wanted to keep things simple relative to the 260GX small desktop power supply which is only spec'd at 180w. Message Edited by mwarch on 12:10 AM. This is a complimentary machine for me, I do most of my work on a mac-- so my choice was based on only putting out $50 to get significant improvement over the integrated video. From what I saw the 9600 cards were at least twice as much money.

Before going to the last-resort option of entirely disabling the Graphics card, I instead tried to lower the temps that the GPU get to - this has appeared to work very well! The permanent solution (for me) was using the free & Excellent 'Fan Control' SysPref - simply increase the 'Base Speed' (for me, from 1500rpm to 2000rpm) and I also reduce the 'Upper Threshold' to 70°C - thus the fans will work harder to keep temps down should they rise.

Just make sure you keep getting the latest bootcamp drivers from the bootcamp assistant instead, I know it's a pain in the ass, but it's much safer, and you will still gain a few fps each update.
